Ashton Futsal Champions

futsal champs 2015Ashton School First Year students Futsal team became the first Cork school to win the FAI Post Primary Schools Munster Futsal Championship. Victories by the team at Ashton School, Blackrock Road, Cork over De La Salle Waterford, CBS Sexton Street Limerick, Mercy Mounthawk Tralee, and CBS High School Clonmel, meant Ashton emerged as victors with a game to spare. A marvellous result, having put in such effort and diligence to training throughout the school year, in sometimes appalling weather conditions.

Futsal is a five a side competition involving close control of their footwork and skill in relation to the ball, which is slightly smaller than the normal football, with less ‘bounce’. The game of Futsal is designed to develop player’s ‘first touch’ and ‘close control’.

The team competed in the Munster National Finals on December 8th, in Dublin, playing the winners of the other provinces.   Ashton proudly came third in Ireland at Futsal in hard-fought battles, playing 6 matches on the one day. A huge achievement for all involved.

Commitment and dedication paid off for this young school-boys team, guided and coached by Mr. Ian Cunningham, Mr. Aidan Buckley, Mr. Dean Lynch and Mr. Stephen Bermingham. Heartiest congratulations.
