Ashton Notes July/August 2015

Fergus Dunne, 6th Year, was awarded First  Prize in Ireland in the U18 Creative Writing for Youth category at Listowel Writer’s Week recently, the result of work he did in English class at Ashton, throughout Junior Cycle years, and in Senior Cycle, guided by Ms. Michelle O’Leary.   Fergus was presented with his prize on the  Opening night of Listowel Writer’s Week, to warm applause from an appreciative literary audience drawn from around the world, among them,  his proud parents, Tom Dunne  and Clare O’Halloran.  Fergus’s short story is now published in the 2015 Anthology of Winners.  What an achievement. Heartiest congratulations to Fergus, a winner at one of the most prestigious literary festivals worldwide.

Fifth year Geography students had a Field Trip to Killarney recently as they completed project-work for their Leaving Certificate examinations.  Students donned their wellingtons, and braved the elements to follow the directions and requirements of fulfilling their port-folios, under the tutelage of Ms. Stoker,  Ms. McCarthy, and Mr. Hobbs.

Congratulations to Emily Whitaker and Lilly Pedersen, who both qualified to participate in the Junior Maths Regional Final recently at Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown.  Special Congratulations to Emily Whitaker who came joint 2nd nationally scoring full marks in all but one question.  The Cork branch of the Irish Maths Teachers Association held their Annual Pi Quiz for Third Year students recently. Ashton was represented by Philip Krause, Ewan Lynch, Zackery Lumley and Benjamin Provan-Bessell, where they won third place in a keenly fought competition.  Well done to the students and  Maths teachers involved.

Ashton School students Brendan Morris and Marcus Fitzgibbon,  winners of the Post Primary Language Initiative competition, winning themselves and their teacher, Olan Geaney a week’s language scholarship in Salamanca in Spain, studying Spanish in a dedicated language school. This is Ashton School’s third time winning the competition, open to all 5th year students of Spanish nationwide, and involved the filming and editing of a Spanish language video in which students highlighted the attractions of Spain’s “Castilla y León ” region.  His Excellency José-María Rodríguez-Coso, Spanish Ambassador to Ireland, presented the winning students with their scholarships at the Spanish Embassy recently, prior to their departure for a week to Spain later during the summer.  A superb win.

Sports Assembly was held recently and awards were presented based on the results of Sports Day held earlier in the month, and for international participation, co-ordinated by Mr. Kirwan, Ms. O’Regan, and Mr. Hobbs.   International Sports Awards were presented to Simon Wolfe for U18 and U21 Hockey, 2014 Junior Euro Championships, at Lousada, Portugal.  Isabelle Canny U19 Karate, World Championships Poznan, Poland.  Rebecca Maye Dancing, Sharples 2014 International Choreography.  Harry Whitaker Sailing, 420 Europeans Poland 2014.  Lena McCarthy U18 Taekwondo, 2014 Irish International Championships.

In Athletics, the McKechnie Cup for Senior Girls High Jump was presented to Lorna McCutcheon. John Hobbs – Best Throw awarded to Sean Hurley.   The Dalton Cup awarded to Emily Whitaker. The Cork Grammar and High School Cup to Alex Lazic.   I.C.I.C.Y.M.A. Cup to Christina Dring.  Creedon Cup to Tony Brophy.  Sloan Cup to Kate O’Donovan. Victor Ludorum Cup to Philip Brownlow. The Joy Murphy Shield for Outstanding Achievement to Philip Brownlow, and the Joy Murphy Medal for Most points scored on Sports Day to Philip Brownlow.  Junior Sports Boy award was presented to Evan Keohane.  Junior Sports Girl was presented to Rebecca Maye.  Senior Sports Boy was presented to Philip Brownlow. An exceptional and most historical event for Philip Brownlow, who got a warm round of applause, and a spontaneous standing ovation from his teachers and peers.  What an achievement !
