Ashton Notes June 2015

Third Year students recently participated in short story writing workshops, supported and encouraged by their English Teachers, facilitated by John W. Sexton, writer, Editor and Facilitator Cork City Teen Short Fiction, as part of the Cork City Libraries and Schools Project, supported by the Arts Office, Cork City Council.   Students, Emily Hynes  and Ewan Lynch  honed their individual skills and craft as writers of fiction,  published in ‘Transmogrified Lives’, and  launched at Cork City Library by Lord Mayor Mary Shields.

Transition Year students participated in poetry writing workshops, facilitated  by Sarah Hayden, Assisting writer and poet, as part of the Cork City Libraries and Schools Project, supported by the Arts Office, Cork City Council, co-ordinated by Ms. Ryan.  Students, Evelyn Sheehan, Annie Walsh, Fianna Nolan, Diarmuid O’Donoghue, and Michael Shiel Lantry,  developed their individual skills and craft as writers of poetry, culminating in being published in ‘The Unfinished Book of Poetry 2015’, launched by the Lord Mayor Mary Shields at Cork City Library.

Kate Sampson, First year student at Ashton School, Blackrock Road, Cork, competed in the Imperial Ballet ISTD Senior Awards recently in West Sussex in England,  a showcase for the world of ballet.

Ashton students, Annie Walsh, Karen Marshall, Natascha Fischer Dooley, and Evelyn Sheehan were special guests at the 29th commemorative anniversary of the world’s biggest nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, which took place at the Lord Mayor’s chambers in the City Hall recently.  Annie Walsh was presented with The Evgenia Nesterenko memorial trophy for the support and assistance she and her colleagues have  given to The Greater Chernobyl Cause. The trophy is dedicated to Belarussiaan girl Evegenia Nesterenko who died at the Mercy Hospital Cork in 1995, a victim of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.  Fiona Corcoran, Founder of the Greater Chernobyl Cause stated how extremely grateful they were to pupils and staff at Ashton School for their outstanding commitment to the children of Chernobyl and Kazakhstan.

On the 28th of May, as a module of Mini-Company,  Annie Walsh, David Jalill, Meghan Quirke, Rachel Warren-Perry, Rima Sadzeviciute, Robbie Stephens and Sarah Jere travelled to the Pheonix Park to construct their aroma-therapeutic garden as part of Bloom In Transition (BIT) annual competition held in Dublin.  Co-ordinated by Mrs. Kerins, students received huge support from Mr. Deane in constructing the timber centre-piece, Mr. Ewart for artistic design,  Fiann O Nualláin for horticultural guidance.

Ashton U13 and U14 Soccer teams travelled  to Blackpool in England over the Easter term, accompanied by Coaches I. Cunningham, S. Bermingham,  D. Coleman, A. Buckley, and 5th year students R. Welch, D. McSweeney, M. O’Neill.   The U13 soccer team beat Red Star BK from Denmark 6-0, qualified for the final.  Despite true grit and determination, were beaten in a game that went to penalties. The  U14 team beat W Always Forwards from Holland ensuring they went through to the final,  against AFC Blayney, Co. Monaghan, who defeated Ashton.   Students  did themselves, their parents, and Ashton proud.

New furniture was purchased for St. Andrew’s Chapel with the assistance of the Church of Ireland Priorities Fund, now neatly in place in the newly renovated Ashton School.

The Annual Sponsored Walk was held in April with a full turn-out of students enthusiastically generating funds for selected charities, Cork Simon Community, Cork Meals on Wheels, Penny Dinners, Christian Aid, Oesophageal Cancer Fund, Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People, Cork Deaf Enterprises, co-ordinated by the P.E. Dept.

Sports Day was held at C.I.T. recently in beautiful sunshine, with enthusiastic participation by all students.  The P.E. Dept. were thrilled when three long-held records were broken by ONE student, Philip Brownlow.  An ‘amazing feat’ Mr. Kirwan stated on the day.   Details to follow in July issue. History maker Philip Brownlow, we congratulate you!

In Hockey, history was made when the Senior Boys beat Villiers, Junior Boys beat Midleton as did the Minor Boys bringing home all three Cups, an amazing feat of skill and determination.  Congratulations to all involved in such a momentous succession of events.
