Launch of “A History of Ashton School” by Alicia St Leger

frontcoverOur long-awaited history book has finally gone to print and will be launched on Friday, 2nd December 2016.  The launch will take place in Ashton School and the book will be launched by special guest – retired teacher and past-principal Bertie Smith.  Put the date in your diary, because it will be an occasion not to be missed.  Plan now to celebrate your time in Ashton and remember your by-gone school days by coming along on the evening to meet up with friends, other past pupils and teachers past and present.

small-poster-for-ashton-history-bookThe book – compiled over decades – is the work of art of author Dr Alicia St Leger.  Alicia is a past-pupil who began her second-level education in Rochelle School.  There is no limit to her dedication to accurately recording the history of the school and the other schools which came together when Ashton was formed – Rochelle School and Cork Grammar School. Alicia is always careful to point out that Cork Grammar School was also an amalgamation of two schools when it joined with Cork High School.  Alicia will be available to meet those who attend and will be happy to sign copies of the book during the night.

On the night you will get more than just a glimpse of the new building – an impressive three-storey structure which brings all the main buildings on the site together to function as one.  That includes the refurbished Sports Hall and the Georgian Cork Grammar School building (Ashton House) which was refurbished during the recent building project – completed and officially re-opened on 27th March 2015. You will also see the art work sculptures – one designed by local artist and past pupil Alex Pentek.

The book will be launched by immediate past-principal Bertie Smith.  Bertie came to Ashton in 1974 and ended his teaching career as principal of Ashton in 2011.  With a connection with the school spanning 37 years, Bertie has been an eye witness of much of the history of the school and, by reputation alone, he promises to give an inspiring launch speech on the night.

If you are a parent, past pupils, or if you have any connection with the school and are interested in the buying the book, you will be welcome on the night.
