The word ‘magic’ conjures up many images, but none as interesting or ‘eye-opening’ as the ‘Science Magic Show ‘ which the Science Teachers at Ashton put on during Science Week, 2016.

The Science Department teachers invited 5th class students, and their teachers from Our Lady of Lourdes National School, and Ballintemple National School to the Laboratory in Ashton during Science Week, to experience science at second level in a different setting.

Students said they were ‘excited’ at what they saw and learned from energetic, interactive, informative presentations, carried out competently and confidently by Ms. Manning, and Ms. Stoutt.

Students mixed chemicals in test-tubes to change colours, experimented with static electricity innovatively, creatively presented posters, entered quizzes, and participated in whole school ‘facts of the day’ awareness. The school presentations ended with the infamous ‘BANG’ (literally!), with an experiment on ‘Chemical Rockets’.

Cross-curricularly, other departments supported the excellent work done in science by incorporating the language of science into their work. One visiting teacher stated that an experience like this for students ‘increased curiosity, and fed inquiring minds’. Another stated that students had ‘fun with science which will always enthuse them’.

Certificates of participation were presented to the visiting National School students, and we look forward to what next year will bring already.   Well done to all involved in such a marvellous ‘science feast’.
