Dear Parents,

I wish to report on two topics which were discussed at our recent AGM.

Contact with Parents Association

A small number of parents expressed a desire for more contact with the school/parents association. Accordingly I wish to remind everyone to make sure that your contact details (telephone number, email address etc.) are kept up to date in the school office so that you will receive text communication etc.

Every parent in the school is automatically a member of the Parents Association.  The Parents Association Committee consists of nine parents elected at AGMs and the committee meets four of five times a year.  If you wish to contact the committee, please send an email to ashtonparents@gmail.com. Information shared by the committee is posted on the News section of the school website www.ashton.ie.  Please check the website regularly so keep up to date.

Weight of Schoolbags

A small number of parents shared a concern about the weight of schoolbags.  As it is not an issue for everyone a one-size-fits-all solution would not be ideal. Instead parents can select from a range of solutions the one which suits them best.

The Parents Association has gathered information from other schools on this topic and is happy to share suggested solutions with parents.

• two sets of books: one for home and another for school
• use of an iPad/tablet instead of books
• divide books into two or three parts to reduce weight
• After School study to reduce the need to bring books home
