Ashton Matters April 2026

Munster Senior Hockey

Ashton School enjoyed a memorable and hard-earned victory in the Munster Senior Boys’ Hockey Final, overcoming Newtown School in a dramatic contest that showcased determination and a true team spirit.

The match proved to be a tightly contested affair from start to finish, with both sides displaying strong defensive organisation and limiting clear goal-scoring opportunities. Despite Ashton’s early pressure and several promising chances, it was Newtown who broke the deadlock in the second half with a well-taken goal, leaving Ashton facing an uphill battle as the game entered its closing stages.

However, the Ashton side showed tremendous character and composure under pressure. With just minutes remaining, a crucial moment arrived when a well-worked move saw Jody Bateman find the back of the net to bring Ashton level. The late equaliser was a testament to the team’s persistence and belief, ensuring that the contest would go all the way.

With no further goals separating the teams, the final was decided by a shuttle shoot-out, which proved to be an intense and fitting conclusion to such an evenly matched game. Ashton held their nerve in the decisive moments, with successful finishes from Charlie Bateman, Daniel Bywater, and Denis McCarthy proving vital. In goal, Hugo Casey-Floodman delivered an outstanding performance, making two crucial saves that ultimately secured a 3–2 victory in the shoot-out and brought the cup back to Ashton.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Ashton School and reflects the dedication and hard work of players and coaches throughout the season. It also highlights the strength of hockey within the school, continuing a proud tradition of success in the competition.

U14 Girls soccer

Ashton School enjoyed a fantastic success in the U14 Girls’ Soccer Final, delivering an outstanding performance to defeat Coláiste Éamonn Rís on a decisive 5–0 scoreline.

From the outset, Ashton played with confidence and energy, moving the ball well and creating chances through excellent teamwork and attacking play. Their dominance was rewarded with a series of well-taken goals, reflecting both their skill and determination throughout the match.

A standout performance came from Melanie Murphy, who was in exceptional form and scored a superb hat-trick. Her clinical finishing and intelligent movement caused constant problems for the opposition defence and proved central to Ashton’s success on the day.

Captain Isla Weighton also played a crucial role, leading by example with a composed and assured display. Her leadership on the pitch helped organise the team and maintain focus from start to finish, ensuring Ashton remained in control throughout.

The victory perfectly capped off an excellent tournament for Ashton, with the team showing impressive consistency and quality in every match along the way. From their early performances through to the final, they demonstrated a strong sense of unity and belief. The growth in the team’s confidence as the competition progressed was a sight to see.
