Ashton Matters January 2026
TY Fast
Transition Year students in Ashton recently demonstrated remarkable generosity and commitment by raising an impressive €1,454.10 for the charity Concern through a 24-hour fast and sleepover held in the school.
The initiative formed part of the students’ Transition Year programme, encouraging young people to engage meaningfully with issues of social justice and solidarity with those experiencing poverty and hardship. By willingly undertaking a 24-hour fast, the students embraced the spirit of sacrifice in support of some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
Throughout the event, the school was filled with a strong sense of positivity and reflection, as students participated in activities that promoted awareness of Concern’s work and the challenges faced by families in developing countries. The overnight stay further strengthened the sense of unity and responsibility among participants, highlighting the importance of working together in service of the common good.
The funds raised will make a difference to Concern’s life-saving work in areas such as food security, education and healthcare. This outstanding fundraising effort reflects not only the students’ hard work and generosity but also the values of compassion and empathy that lie at the heart of the school community.
Sincere thanks are extended to Ms Savage, who organised the event and who also generously stayed overnight, and to Ms Dennehy and Mr Casey, who likewise gave their time to ensure the event ran safely and smoothly throughout.
The school community is immensely proud of the Transition Year students for their efforts and for the powerful example they have set.
Choir
The Annual Christmas Concert was a huge success this year, with all classes showcasing different aspects of their practical work done in music class.
First-year students demonstrated their glockenspiel skills, while third years performed on tin whistle and recorder. Second-year students delighted the audience with their prize-winning choral pieces from last year’s Feis Ceoil, highlighting the high standard of musicianship within the school.
Congregational singing and strong team spirit were evident throughout the evening, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. One of the highlights of the concert was the senior students’ performances, which included a lively rendition of Beatles classics as well as an original composition developed during the “Luan” workshop.
The concert concluded with a wonderful performance by the Ashton School Choir, featuring several audience favourites. The evening ended on a joyful note with a fun and energetic rendition of Feliz Navidad, accompanied by Mr Adrian Landen and conducted by Mr William Quinn.
Looking ahead, the Music Department has an exciting programme planned. Upcoming activities include a trip to Cantequera in Málaga for the School Choir and a performance and workshop in advance of The Cunning Little Vixen at the Everyman Theatre in February, in conjunction with Irish National Opera.
