Ashton Matters October 2025
Open Day
The Ashton School Open Day proved to be a wonderful success, welcoming new prospective students and their families to experience all that the Ashton School community has to offer. The event provided an excellent opportunity for visitors to meet staff and students, explore the facilities, and gain an insight into life at Ashton.
Throughout the day, guests were greeted warmly by our senior cycle students who guided tours and shared their own experiences of school life. Each department presented engaging displays of student work while teachers were on hand to discuss the broad range of subjects, extracurricular activities, and supports available to students.
Transition Year Trip to Achill Island
In late September, the transition-year students from Ashton School set off on an unforgettable adventure to Achill Island, Co. Mayo, one of Ireland’s most breathtaking and rugged landscapes. The trip, filled with laughter, teamwork, and a healthy dose of the Achill rain, became an early highlight for the TY students and an experience that will be remembered for years to come.
Surfing proved to be the students favourite activity from the start. Students took to the waves of Keel Beach guided by expert instructors. For many, it was their first time surfing. While standing on the board seemed to be tricky, the exhilaration of catching a wave was worth every tumble into the sea.
Beyond the activities, the trip was about much more than the outdoor pursuits. It created new friendships, encouraged resilience, and reminded students of the value of stepping outside their comfort zone. Evenings were filled with stories, laughter, talent shows and a great sense of accomplishment shared by all students.
First Year Trip
Our first-year students recently enjoyed an exciting and action-packed trip to West Cork Secret adv. The trip proved to be a wonderful opportunity for students to bond, build friendships, and enjoy all the activities West Cork Secret has to offer
From obstacle courses and water challenges to group activities that encouraged cooperation and communication, the students embraced every aspect of the experience with smiles on their faces.
The trip gave a wonderful opportunity for students to get to know one another outside the classroom and help them to build confidence early in their first year in Ashton School. Teachers accompanying the group praised the students for their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Gaisce Awards
Ashton School recently celebrated the achievements of 35 students who completed Gaisce – The President’s Award programme.
Eight students received the Silver Award, recognising their dedication and leadership. A further twenty-seven students earned the Bronze Award, completing challenges in community service, personal development, and physical activity.
These awards reflect the students’ commitment, teamwork, and determination which are qualities that embody the spirit of Gaisce and as well as our own school’s ethos. Congratulations to all who took part, and sincere thanks to the staff who guided and encouraged them throughout their journey.
All in all, a great start to school year for all
