Ashton News October 2014

Students returned to Ashton in August with the grounds completed, all verdant green, and ancillary facilities in place for parking and much more. In June, Ms. Creedon attended a reception at Áras an Úachtaráin with President Michael D. Higgins.  This was part of the award to Ashton School for coming second in the Comórtas Chorn Bedell Irish Language competition, organised by Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.  Other Ashton Irish teachers involved include Ms. Deirdre McCarthy, Mr. Olan Geaney and Ms. Niamh Tóibín.  The purpose of the competition is to encourage greater use of the Irish language among young people in the Church of Ireland post-primary Protestant schools.  The visit to the President took place as part of the celebration of 100 years of the founding of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise. A great occasion.

Junior Certificate students received their results in mid September and the corridors resounded with screams of delight and relief as students revelled in superb results, after all the hard work over the previous three years. Annie Walshe received a staggering 10 A grades in her Junior Certificate – a truly magnificent achievement.  Hearty congratulations to all students, and teachers on such great results

After school study has resumed for students,  with full take-up on all evenings, which augurs well for the positive attitudes of students toward their studies.

Adult Education has also resumed with lots of interesting and dynamic courses available.  To reserve a place, please contact the Adult Education Office on Tel: 021-4322382, Fax: 0214966321, Email: adulted@ashton.ie

Open Day took place on September 19th, with capacity crowds of intending students and parents attending. Prefects and Transition Year students accompanied visitors to the various classrooms and viewed the work of students over the past year.  The colour, vibrancy, and educational impact of the display,  captured the essence of the achievements of students, both academic and sporting. On the previous evening, Thurs. Sept 18th an Information Evening was held for prospective students and their parents, which was equally well attended, with ‘ full house’ capacity.  Mr. Landen Principal,  Ms. Hewison Deputy Principal, along with Mr. Ruttle School Chaplain, and other staff espoused the benefits of student participation in the various curricular programmes taught at Ashton, as well as the many other programmes, including sporting, and extra-curriculur programmes,  which lead to the holistic development of students.

Sincere sympathy and condolences are expressed from the staff and Board of Management of Ashton School to the family of Dr. Richard Beamish who passed away recently.   Dr. Beamish had been a science teacher over many years in the school, with a particular focus on Physics.  Former students and staff remember him with great affection.  We extend our sympathy to his extended family at this difficult time.
