Ashton Notes March 2015
We wish all students sitting state pre-examinations at this time lots of luck and peace of mind as they prepare for and complete examination papers and projects. We join with their parents in supporting them in every way we can.
Rian Herlihy in 5th Year has received due acclaim this year after her momentous ‘swim’ in June from Spain to Africa, breaking the Irish Women’s record for this event. She was recently presented with the Juvenile Swimmer of the Year award in Wicklow recently.
At a recent Assembly, Action Week Committee co-ordinated by Mr. Ruttle, presented cheques totaling Euros 3,700 to the designated charities, which were Aware, Christian Aid, Mercy Hospital, Irish Cancer Society, Irish Autism. Each organisation spoke at Assembly, recounting anecdotes and stories which explained the importance and significance of raising funds for these charities, and thanked students sincerely for their generosity. Students had participated in many and varied activities during the last week of term in October 2014, and it was the result of this hard work along with much fun, which generated the grand total of 3,700 euros. What a superb achievement.
Transition Year students Megan Berry, Alannah Bertwistle and Lydia French entered a fashion competition ‘Junk Kouture’ which is held annually In Ireland. The aim of the competition is to make an outfit using only recyclable materials. They completed this creative project and submitted their ‘entry’. We wish them luck. Entrepeneurs of the future!!
In Mini-Company, co-ordinated by Ms. Taylor, Ms. Kerins, Mr. Hobbs, lots of exciting ideas are being explored as students come up with ingenious ideas to produce and sell attractive products, usually to their parents and co-horts, and depending on feedback, to the general public. Participation in this programme generates many opportunities for innovation, creativity, business acumen, public relations, customer care and product development. We look forward to their interesting products. What an experience!
In Badminton, 2nd year Ashton students ‘played a blinder’ when the competed in the Inter School’s Badminton competition at Rochestown College. They played against Midleton CBS and Rochestown College, coming away with outstanding results. Adam French and Neville Beamish (2nd Year) won silver medals for their diligence. Alastair Swanton was awarded the Overall Gold Medal for his skilfulness.
In Hockey, Ashton are playing the Senior Boy’s Semi-Final of the Munster Cup against Bandon Grammar School. The girls are travelling to Limerick to play the Semi-Final of the Senior Girl’s Cup against Crescent College. We wish them luck in all their training and future matches.
Soccer is also extremely busy, the Ashton U19 Soccer team reached the Semi-Final of the Cork Cup, in a hard fought win against Midleton CBS 2-1, coached by an ever-patient Mr. Deane.
