Sporting students at Ashton recently had the marvelous opportunity to ‘try out’ Lacrosse as a field game.

Tom Prior, head coach for the Irish Under 19’s team, and Dick Pepper international referee co-ordinated the event, organised through Lacrosse Ireland.

They travelled from New York to deliver an introductory workshop with a group of fifth year girls and boys at Ashton, in the hopes of generating interest for the upcoming world games which will be hosted in UL in 2020.

They initiated the day by introducing the students to the history of the sport, encouraging questions and interaction about the game with the students. Students were then introduced to the  basic skills of the sport, which they enjoyed thoroughly, despite the appallingly inclement weather on the day. The students persisted with a ‘friendly’ game to finish off the ‘workshop’.

Head Coach Tom Prior, and International Referee  Dick Pepper were extremely generous in donating a full gear – kit to the school, to further encourage uptake of the sport, which the school was delighted to accept.

It was an exciting afternoon with lots of new skills learned, co-ordinated by Ms. Falvey P.E. Dept.   The coaches felt that Ashton students had great attitudes, and represented some real talent for the sport for Ireland into the future.  Exciting times ahead.
