Biology Leaving Certificate

Biology students in Ashton are challenged to open their minds to the diversity of life around them. We endeavour to create an appreciation for how far biology has come through studies into evolution. Why do ostridges not fly? Do birds urinate? Why have humans evolved to become taller over the last 300 years? We foster an awareness of the many applications of biology in our modern society take the areas of medicine, agriculture, waste management, horticulture, and conservation to name a few.

We motivate our students to develop an attitude of scientific enquiry and discovery as they progress through the syllabus. They begin with cells, expand into human systems and explore the interlinking between organisms and their ecosystems.

Students attain skills in analysing quantitative and qualitative data. Interpretive skills, formulating hypothesis and drawing conclusions are naturally built into the practical aspects of the course. As students conclude their studies of Biology in Ashton, they should enjoy the challenge of answers these questions, why do my fingers get wrinkled in the bath? What causes butterflies in your tummy when nervous? What is a dead leg? Do twins share a common fingerprint? Biology branches into so many varying areas in third level, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, plant sciences and medical therapies to think of just a few.
