Hallo!
We, in the German Department in Ashton, are strongly committed to fostering a love of German in our students and enabling them to communicate effectively in the language. By studying German, it gives students the chance to learn about a new culture in a fulfilling way. Studying another language allows students to broaden their horizons in various ways.
Learning German will allow students to become more proficient in the following skills
Oral Proficiency
Aural Proficiency
Comprehension Proficiency
Written Proficiency
Our German Department is always looking for new and exciting ways to promote German outside the classroom as well as inside the classroom. We currently offer many different Extra-Curricular activities to try and do this including entering essay and translation competitions, attending a German breakfast morning, Kris Kindle etc. By far our most popular extra -curricular activity is our German exchange. Every year in Ashton students studying German in 2nd Year have the chance to participate in a German exchange. Ashton school is linked with “Lessing Gymnasium” secondary school in Cologne where students spend ten days in the homes of the German students and the return visit sees students from Cologne coming to Cork, staying with Irish families and attending classes at Ashton.
Students have described the German exchange as ‘a once in a lifetime experience’ and one they will never forget!
