Ashton School News March 2024
Ashton School.
March brings out the daffodils, a ‘riot of colour’ giving energy and optimism to us all!
We congratulate Junior and Leaving Certificate students who recently completed the Pre-Examinations in the lead-up to the State Examinations in June. They now complete all projects, practical subject submissions and orals. We wish them, their teachers and parents good luck and peace of mind.
Transition Year students have been extremely busy with interesting activities. A group visited Cork Prison where they learned about the functioning of a prison and the educational requirements necessary to work in this area. In UCC T.Y’s attended a Frisbee competition and enjoyed the challenge of a very different game! Students also participated in a Flag Day for The Greater Chernobyl Cause raising much needed funds for a most worthy charity. The Driving Education Workshop is always a ‘Winner’ with students, a life-skill is gained which stays with them for life. They learned to check the oil, change a tyre, check windscreen water, and much more. They completed a simulated Driver Theory Test, all in preparing them to be safer drivers on the road eventually.
The Transition Year Music class visited St. Finbarr’s Cathedral recently, and were given a guided tour of a very historic building associated with the original founding of Cork city. They also enjoyed participating in a recital of songs, under the baton of Mr. Stobart.
Work Experience proved to be most worthwhile for students, gaining valuable insights into the world of work, the reality of time-keeping, schedules, personal responsibility, social skills and lots more. What a great opportunity!
The T.Y. musical ‘Oliver’ went down a ‘treat’ as it always does, maximum capacity audiences this year, exceeding all other show attendances. Student commitment was outstanding, and they learned to work well as a team. Casting of roles is such skill in itself, but show director Mr. Ruttle has this one down to ‘a fine art’! Students shone on stage in ways we never usually see in a regular classroom setting. The heart strings were ‘tugged’ by this age-old story of ‘good overcoming evil’, all the familiar songs and melodies bringing the audiences back to childhood memories. What a treat! We extend congratulations to ALL involved in a magnificent production, guided by director Mr. Ruttle.
Six TY students travelled to Kolkatta with HOPE Foundation recently, having an eye opening experience on this valuable learning trip. They fundraised extensively prior to their departure to ensure the children of Kolkatta would avail of improved education and nutrition. Well done to the courageous students and their supportive parents. A truly worthy cause.
In Hockey: 2nd Year Minor A Girls had a successful outcome when they played Regina Mundi recently. The result came following weeks of training, dedicated practice and commitment to their sport.
1st Year Girls had a convincing win against Ursuline Convent, Thurles, illustrating their future capacity and winning possibilities. We congratulate them all, their coaches and trainers.
The Boys Junior and Senior Teams continue with their busy training schedules as they prepare for upcoming games.
