Ashton School News May 2024

Ashton School.

The Ashton School Choir, under the baton of Dr. Mary O’Brien, and accompanied by Principal Mr. Adrian Landen attended the Vox Lucensis Choral Festival in Lucca, Italy from the 22nd to 27th March 2024. They won the ‘Top Level Silver Diploma in Mixed Voice Youth Choir competition, against stiff competition. Great friendships were made as they attended musical concerts and a workshop. An incidental meeting with an Irish School Principal resulted in an invitation to sing at Lucca International School, which was thoroughly enjoyed. The day trip to Pisa and local sightseeing, along with watching international choirs from all around the world, generated enthusiasm and much learning for the students. Congratulations one and all.

Right Rev. Bishop Paul Colton was welcomed to Assembly by Mr. Adrian Landen, Principal, assisted by Mr. Richard Lester, Deputy Principal, along with the students and staff, to celebrate his 25th year as Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. Eoin Prendeville, Alison Olaniran, Harry Jackson and Hazel O’Connell, Head Students, greeted Bishop Colton on behalf of the students. Eoin Prendeville spoke in welcome of Bishop Colton, and Alison Olaniran presented him with a gift to mark the occasion. This was followed by a musical presentation by the Ashton School Choir. This was followed by the planting of an Oak tree in the grounds of the school, and visits by Bishop Colton to classes and classrooms, bringing back many happy memories of his time at Ashton as a student.

6th Year students recently went on a Physics trip to the Tyndall Institute in UCC, where they attended lectures on Physics and visited the campus, co-ordinated by Ms. Stoutt.

French Department, co-ordinated by Ms. Power and Ms. Ryan visited Paris with 20 TY students from French class, in what was an outstanding trip. Students attended language classes each morning. They visited cultural and historical sites, including Montmartre, Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur. They really enjoyed the Baton Rouge trip on a boat on the Seine. They also visited George Pompidou centre and had the privilege of a visit to Stade de France where the Olympics will be held later this year. Trés magnifique!.

Seachtain na Gaeilge was a resounding success as always, the corridors and classrooms were a riot of colour with posters and bunting of all colours, encouraging and enticing us all to speak the ‘cúpla focal’. A ‘Tráth na gCeist’ was enjoyed by all the year groups, along with a Céilí for 1st year students. Assembly celebrated our Irishness, Irish language and culture. This included Irish music, songs from the Ashton School Choir, Irish dancing, and a most innovative ‘flashmob’ song involving the entire school singing ‘An Dreoilín’. Co-Ordinated by the Irish Department. Gaeilge abú.

Recently, 27 students studying German from 4th and 5th year classes embarked on an exhilarating trip to Cologne in Germany. During the 4 day trip they spent time at some of Colognes most iconic and well known attractions such as the F.C Cologne Football stadium, the Lindt chocolate museum and the breath-taking Cologne cathedral. Students immerse themselves in the German culture and language, co-ordinated by Mr. Mulcahy, Ms. Dennehy and Ms. Kingston.
