Ashton Notes July and August 2014

Leaving Certificate students had their Graduation Evening recently and were commended by their Year Head Mrs. Murphy who acknowledged their genial personalities and diligence as a Year group. Each student was presented with a memento of the occasion along with photos which documented their progression through the school, from First year to Leaving Certificate.

The coveted UCC Graduate of the Year went to Cork native David Berry, past-pupil of Ashton, and is UCC’s outgoing Student’s Union (SU) Welfare Officer.  The applied psychology student has been snapped up by University College London, where he will undertake a master’s in Cognitive Neuro Science this September.  Congratulations David, well done.

Catherine Foley, a longstanding Science Teacher at Ashton, recently announced her retirement. She has been associated as a Teacher at Ashton for 34 years, accruing a long and distinguished career.  At a staff meeting recently, Mr. Landen, Principal, spoke fondly of his memories both as a student of Catherine’s, and a colleague of hers when he too became a Science Teacher.  Catherine is looking forward to following new interests and hobbies at this juncture of her life, and we wish her luck, health and happiness as she follows new directions.  The Board of Management presented Catherine with a Bog Oak sculpture. There was also a presentation from staff at a most convivial  reception in the new staffroom at Ashton.

The First Year Boys Soccer team won the College Corinthians School’s Cup in an exciting game of soccer beating Presentation Brothers College 4-3 in the final.  Congratulations to everyone involved including coaches and Mr. Cunningham.  A marvellous result.

Sports Assembly was held recently in the Sports Hall, co-ordinated by Mr. Kirwan, Ms. O’Regan, and  Mr. Hobbs. Winners were A. O’Donovan: Dalton Cup, T. Brophy: Cork Grammar School and High School Cup, R. Atkinson/C. Dring: I.C.I.C.Y.M.A. Cup, J. Murray-Good: Creedon Cup, K. O’Donovan: Sloan Cup, P. Brownlow: Victor Ludorum Cup, D.
