Sports Assembly was held recently subsequent to Sports Day held at Ashton School, which was a resounding success. The Physical Education Department co-ordinated the event, with Mr. Eddie Kirwan – Master of Ceremonies, supported by Ms. Dennehy, Mr. Lester, Ms. Sheehan, Ms. Ní Thuama.
Mr. Landen and Ms. Hewison welcomed everyone to Assembly, always eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike.
Mr. Kirwan outlined some motivational sporting anecdotes which always prove interesting and enlightening, at the outset of proceedings. Students sat, listened, and took in all that was said. Words of wisdom from a wise ‘sage’ of this generation. Prizes and awards were presented to students under various categories.
In Hockey, Irish U18 at International level, Cian Dorgan participated in the 8 Nations Tournament in Frankfurt, Germany July 2022.
James Young participated in the Irish U18’s verses England in Bisham, England from 12th to 15th Feb., 2023.
Louis McDaid, took part in the Irish U16’s in Tri-Nations in Acchen, Germany 2023.
Jamie Venner participated in the Irish Indoor Hockey Senior Development Squad vs. Poland in Gasawa, Poland 6th -8th Jan. 2023.
In Soccer, Jaden Umeh participated in the U15’s in Croatia, where he played a tournament against Cyprus, Spain and Croatia.
In Soccer U19, Franco Umeh is now part of the European Championship qualifying elite phase, since March 2023.
In Soccer U16 and U17 Matthew Murray participated in the U16 Victory Shield, RSC Waterford, Ireland in October 2022. He also played in the European Qualifiers in U17 in Cyprus, in March 2023.
In Athletics, Okwuchukwu Backari took part in the European Youth Olympics in Slovakia, in July 2022.
Ryan Onoh participated in the English Championships in Luton, England in July 2022.
Ice Skating Internationals: Eve McDonald and Chloe Coughlan participated in Toulouse, France in January 2023.
Trophies and Cups with enormous historical significance, and personal connection with Ashton, were presented to various students.
The John Hobbs Best Throw shield was presented to Adam Kamel. The Dalton Cup for overall Junior Girl on Sports Day was awarded to Emma Barry. The Cork Grammar and High School Cup for Overall Junior Boy was awarded to Rory Jackson. The ICICYMA Cup for overall Inter Girl was won by Zanne Healy Bird. The Creedon Cup for Overall Inter boys was awarded to Ryan Onoh. The Sloan Cup for Overall Senior Girls was won by Joy Sampson. The Victor Ludorum Cup from 1918 for Overall Senior Boy on Sports Day was presented to Neil Barrett. The Joy Murphy Shield for Outstanding Achievement was won by Nicola Sullivan. The Joy Murphy Medal for Most points scored on Sports Day was presented to Zanne Healy Bird.
The event culminated in the presentations of Junior and Senior Sports awards.
The Senior Sports Girl for 2023 was awarded to Julia McCarthy. Senior Sports Boy 2023 was a joint award presented to Cian Dorgan and Jamie Venner.
Junior Sports Girl was awarded to Zara Black and Junior Sports Boy was presented to Eoin Fitzpatrick. We congratulate you one and all, your mentors, coaches, teachers, and equally your ever patient parents. Well done.
