Lord Mayor Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald visits Ashton
Lord Mayor Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald, accompanied by his wife, Lady Mayoress Georgina Fitzgerald visited Ashton on Oct. 25th. The school choir, led by Mr. Peter Stobart provided a warm welcome to the visitors, for which they were complimented.
Principal Mr. Landen, accompanied by Ms. Hewison greeted and welcomed the Lord Mayor, and Lady Mayoress, accompanied by Head Girl Emma Wilkinson, and Head Boy Zach Lumley.
Lord Mayor Fitzgerald spoke to students of the importance of national identity, especially in the singing of our National Anthem at any event, and the significance and respect the song should be given, in the context of who we are as a nation. He spoke about the importance of life-long education, encouraging students to lead a balanced approach to education, sport and leisure activities.
Lord Mayor Fitzgerald explained about the history of the Lord Mayor’s chain, which is the original chain, 230 years in existence. He further clarified that this chain represents each individual citizen of Cork City, he being the custodian of this important symbol for the duration of his office, being one year.
