Historic ‘FIRSTS’ for Ashton Rowing team at Irish Schools Rowing Championships.

What an exciting time in the evolving history of Ashton School, such success for students this year, 2016/2017, and still it goes on!. Keep an eye on the school website!

Mr. Beechinor joined the teaching staff at Ashton this year, teaching Physical Education and Maths,  and generated great interest in rowing during this time,  having a noble and proud tradition of involvement and expertise himself.  He has represented his country successfully in the ‘Homes International’, and the ‘Coup de la Jeunesse’, both prestigious internationally based competitions, gaining his place after arduous and intense training and time trials, dedication to gym-work, along with strict diet and nutrition plans.  He is now a coach with Cork Boat Club.

With such expertise, it was not long before Mr. Beechinor formed an Ashton Rowing Team for the first time in the history of the school, consisting of William Ronayne, Conor O’Malley, Peter Leonard, Luke Lee, Ciara McCarthy, and Daniel McCarthy.

The Ashton Rowing Club’s first outing was to O’Brien’s Bridge, Co. Clare over the Easter holidays.  They had tremendous success.  Peter Leonard and Daniel McCarthy were awarded 1st place in the Single Sculls, and followed this up with another 1st place in the Double Sculls.  Fantastic results for a first time venture by Ashton in the sport.

Overall on the day, Ashton finished 20th out of 71 competing schools, with the smallest team of participants.  Superb result.  All the rowers will continue training with their own clubs, for the upcoming Club National Championships in July in Farran, at the National Rowing Centre on Inniscarra Lake.  We wish them well in all they do. Hearty congratulations.
